In the last few days I got a major hankering for seeking out some of those songs that were excellently covered by The Dead throughout the years, but not necessarily played very often, and sometimes only once. Please help! What are your favorite dead-covered-toons. Specific versions would be much appreciated. Here's a little something to kick off the list.

(Take Me To the River) Al Green

only a fragment, but how but some Brecht/Weill?

Although I am more partial to a When I Paint My Masterpiece or I Shall Be Released by the JGB, and even though they played it a lot, I gotta say that imho It's All Over Now Baby Blue was Jerry's best cover with the GD. Here's my favorite:

333 covers, according to the site below. It includes the number of times they were played, including sound checks.

There's been some great suggestions here. Since they covered more than 300 songs, you have unlimited opportunity. For a terrific taste of 1971 Dead I happen to love Ain't It Crazy (The Rub) featuring PigPen on the harp, and I Second That Emotion, both from the "Ladies & Gentleman" album, and not played that often, really sharp playing from Jerry. Unfortunately, not here on the archive -- but that playlist contains a boatload of good covers, including one they played over 400 times - Good Lovin', and BIODTL, played over 300 times.

Just for shits and giggles, how about Werewolves of London? ... http://www.archive.org/details/gd78-05-05.glassberg.vernon.18655.sbeok.shnf

Funny, Eyes just started when I saw your reply. Horns come onstage for Eyes and remain for the rest of the show. Personally I can’t say they enhance the song all that much, but it is quite a different take and somewhat interesting. I think perhaps they work a little better in the Weather Report suite, but like someone said yesterday it doesn't always seem that they very familiar with the material.

Look no further than TDIH http://www.archive.org/details/gd1985-06-22.sbd.greider.keith.2665.sbeok.shnf I, too, prefer Dylan tunes for the boys, but I know a lot of people who like Keep On Growing. A few other covers at this show.

Sorry everyone. That was my first time trying to use hyper links. I am severely disappointed that they don't link right. What the EFF! Any tips on what I did wrong would be much appreciated.

Thanks to all you out there who truly know what good music is.

I usually type up my posts in Word, which has the advantage of spelling and thesaurus help, in addition to enabling me to keep the forum window open for reference when replying to a thread. My method when inserting a link – I open the show page of the version I wish to use, highlight the entire address bar, copy and paste it into my document. Then hit return and the link will be ready to go.

Well, technically-speaking, wouldn't "Morning Dew" be considered a cover tune? If so, that def. gets my vote.

If not, I'll go with Visions of Johanna.

I'd differentiate between covers of songs that are either traditional (blues, folk, etc) or could be thought of as Americana (Johnny Cash, etc), and covers of rock songs clearly identified with other artists (Beatles, Traffic, Who, etc.)

To me, the first type of cover is a matter of working in the same tradition as musicians through the ages. Whether it's Morning Dew or Iko Iko or Mama Tried, it really becomes their own, and is very much absorbed into the Dead universe.

But with the popular rock songs, I can never shake the sense of it being a bit of a novelty song for the boys. They just don't end up "owning" it. Same with Dylan. It may be awfully darned good, but it always feels like the Dead doing Dylan.

I dislike all the Beatles, Traffic, Stones or Who covers. I really enjoy Pigpen's covers - Smokestack, Hard to Handle, Lovelight. Is 'Me and my Uncle' a cover ? But best of all for me are the Dylan covers. An example that wasn't played very often, but had a good run in 1985 - 'She belongs to me' http://www.archive.org/details/gd85-06-15.sbd.griesman.5682.sbeok.shnf I think Garcia commented on Dylan being the best songwriter of his generation, and you can hear the warmth and respect whenever he played one of his songs. (See also JGB.)

Me and My Uncle was written by John Phillips. (I cheated. I looked it up. I thought it was a Merle Haggard tune or something.) The weird thing is that it was apparently also done by Judy Collins. Um, Judy Collins left her uncle dead by the side of the road? Huh? Anyway, that's what Wikipedia says (and it's always accurate, of course ....)

I knew it was written by John Phillips, I was wondering if
he ever recorded or played it (alone or with M & Ps). I had no idea Judy Collins had done it. Perhaps it doesn't count as a 'cover' then.

I've always enjoyed Jerry's solo on Ballad of a Thin Man. I think they played it twice and this is my preferred version:

Here's a version of Do It On the Road that I really like. It's tight, it cooks, and it doesn't degenerate into The Comedy Moment ...

http://www.archive.org/details/gd84-07-06.senn441.dodd.13898.sbeok.shnf

On the whole, though, I tend not to be sold on the cover versions of well-known songs (Traffic, Beatles, etc). While I do get into Mr. Fantasy when I hear it, it just doesn't sound Dead to me.

I'm not even keen on the Dylan covers, although they were doing them from the beginning and were clearly big on Dylan. In fact, there's a great '69 moment on Live at Fillmore East where Jerry is really channeling Dylan during Doin' That Rag. (The AY-ces are CRAW-ling up and DOWN your SLEEEVE ...) Entertaining every time.
